Introduction to Vectors

Represent vectors in two dimensions; perform vector arithmetic; resolve vectors into components; apply to geometric proofs and motion.

Sample questions
  1. 1.ABCD is a quadrilateral with AB = p and AD = q. Express AC and BD in terms of p and q.
  2. 2.A particle moves with velocity v = 3i − 4j. Find its speed and direction of motion.
Exam weighting

4–6 marks — geometric proofs are a challenging application.

Common student mistakes
  • ·Confusing column vectors with position vectors
  • ·Incorrect vector subtraction direction
  • ·Forgetting to express magnitude using Pythagoras
